Dr. Klein's Tips for Students

Hello everyone, Dr. Klein here. While Austin the Unstoppable is a musical comedy, health and wellness is no joke. Because of the increase in unhealthy lifestyles over the past 30 years, the research now shows this is the first generation of children in the United States likely to live shorter and less healthy lives than their parents. Change is never easy, but here are a few important things that you can do develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle:

Eat a variety of fresh foods, mostly vegetables.
If you eat a variety of foods, you are more likely to get all of the nutrients that your body needs to be healthy. Everyday plan on eating three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit.
When eating, listen to your body.
Eat slowly and thoroughly chew your food. Did you know that your brain needs about 20 minutes to get the “I’m full!” signal from your stomach? When you overeat, you can cause your body to feel uncomfortable, so stop eating when you are satisfied, not when you are full.
When selecting a beverage to drink, Drink Water.
Nothing quenches your thirst better than water. Soda and other artificially sweetened beverages add a lot of unnecessary calories and provide almost no nutrients that your body needs. Do you remember the soda that Austin and Dylan chugged at the beginning of the show? They were actually drinking 19 teaspoons of sugar.
Be Active.
Find a way to be active every day. An unhealthy diet and inactivity are linked to heart disease, which is the number one cause of death in the United States. Staying active will keep you healthy, strong, and physically able to accomplish your dreams.
